I used Avast for several years and it seemed to be ok, apart from the annoying American voice telling me every time it updated itself. They changed it recently to an even more annoying English voice.
Anyway, regardless of that, I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials on the recommendation of people here, and it too seems to be ok and is completely unobtrusive.
