One of the advantages of a close focusing telephoto lens is the background
'bokeh' attainable. An example is here

It was really brought home to me last June when the vast majority of my
blooms and bugs shots were with my 300mm f4.5 FA. I had never used it that
way and was very pleased with the results. It close focuses to a little less
than 7 feet.
