I wonder if the Egret was too close to the Red-winged Blackbird's nest?
Would an egret eat the chicks if it got the chance?

Yes, mallards, that's one Redwing Blackbird, and it was repeatedly dive
bombing the Egret. At one point the Egret was literally standing on the
female Mallard.

Tough exposure on the Egret, what with the darkish background. What
appear might be Red Wing Blackbirds,
are well caught.
Are those a couple ducks in the audience lurking in the right center?

Driving along CT RT 146, I saw this Great Egret hunting in a marsh, I
didn't have rhe right lens combination but I did have the Vivitar S1
70-210mm f2.8~4.0 with me and the F 1.7X AF adapter. I had just shot a
couple of test shots to get get the exposure in the ball park when this
happened. This combination really seems to front focus a lot on with
the K-5II so technically these shots aren't the the best technically,
but I hope the content makes up for it.

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/vmc Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f2.8~4.0
(Komine) and smc Pentax FA 1.7x AF Adapter.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.
