Remember that flap a couple of years back about Apple tracking locations of iPhone users?
i remember the flap, but the facts were different; there was location data logged on the phone itself, but Apple didn't have access to it; people were unhappy that someone who got hold of your phone could see where you had been
as for the GPS data in photos — Apple (and Android, i assume) cameras have an option to turn off the camera's access to location info; that's easier than remembering to strip them later, and a good protective step when giving a phone to someone "less savvy"
