The *ist-D definitely did it.  In fact it pretty much had to;
with FAT16 formatting of the media cards you could only have
a maximum of 512 files in a single folder.

FAT16 had a maximum partition size of 2GB, but that wasn't a
problem back in those days; it was only towards to the end of
its life that I bought 2GB CF cards to use with my *ist-D
(I did have a couple of 1GB microdrives, though - they were
about half the price of equivalent capacity solid state cards)

I don't know first hand whether the K10D would have done that,
but I'd be prepared to bet that it did - it originally released
with only support for SD cards, not SDHC (which allowed you to
use cards larger than 2GB, and also increased the directory size
limit to 65536).

I wouldn't expect Pentax to remove the functionality from the
internal code - there's very little downside of leaving it there,
just in case somebody uses an old sD card. And it's not a limit
most people are going to run into, especially if you name your
folders by date - few casual shooters will take 500 shots in a day,
and if you shoot RAW you're quite likely to run out of space well
before you can get to 500 shots (which would typically require well
over 2GB on a *ist-D, and even more - over 4GB - on a K10D).

Nowadays, with larger-capacity SDHC cards, it's more likely to be
observed. With an older camera (such as my K5) I don't like to
use cards larger than 16GB; I like to limit the number of eggs that
I keep in a single basket. If I ever get a K-3, with the ability
to write the images onto two different cards, I'll probably switch
to something larger.
