When you say "Amazon has it listed" you have to be careful because
Amazon may (themselves) not be the seller. In this case, the $3880
price is "Ships from and sold by TOKYO CAMERA / WorldWide Shipping."
People can (and do) make up all sorts of prices for items which they
don't have in hand.

Two other Japanese sellers (on Amazon) are offering it for $2474.49, shipped.

It is possible that japan will see the lens before U.S. sellers (all
three seem to indicate a late December ship date) get their hands on
it, so some might pay a premium to have it a couple of months before
other U.S. early birds.

The Nikon lens that it is probably aiming to be the equivalent of is
the $2100 AF-S NIKKOR
70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. Canon's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Telephoto Zoom is just under $2K.
