When you say "Amazon has it listed" you have to be careful because Amazon may (themselves) not be the seller. In this case, the $3880 price is "Ships from and sold by TOKYO CAMERA / WorldWide Shipping." People can (and do) make up all sorts of prices for items which they don't have in hand.
Two other Japanese sellers (on Amazon) are offering it for $2474.49, shipped. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00T70TPQO/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new It is possible that japan will see the lens before U.S. sellers (all three seem to indicate a late December ship date) get their hands on it, so some might pay a premium to have it a couple of months before other U.S. early birds. The Nikon lens that it is probably aiming to be the equivalent of is the $2100 AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. Canon's EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM Telephoto Zoom is just under $2K.
