VERY interesting, Don. Thanks for sharing. It seems to me that those boats are canoes, and that they are paddled, like the outrigger canoes we use in Maui, rather than being rowed, like the shells in my images from Dartmouth. The two forms of propulsion look very similar from shore, but are actually quite different. Especially with the sliding seats used on racing shells, rowing gets most of its power from leg and back muscles, while paddling is all upper body work.
