I once went to a talk by Philip Jones-Griffiths in which he said many things 
about picture editors, the kindest thing being that an essential qualification 
is blindness.

Here's a case which proves him wrong. 

The article is accompanied by a stock picture of a horse, which is helpful 
because nobody has the slightest idea what a horse looks like. A bad picture 
editor would have chosen to show at least Kyrgyzstan's national dish, something 
we're all familiar - perhaps even overfamiliar - with.
