BINGO, John. I was just joking about trying to "gild the lilies." Actually, this is a science demonstration of evapotranspiration, which my wife often did when she taught environmental science, and was now doint to prepare for a demonstration for the science education nonprofit she works with now. http://water.usgs.gov/edu/watercycleevapotranspiration.html She put the flowers in water with food coloring, and the dye leaves colored lines on the edge of the petals, where the evaporation occurs most strongly.
