BINGO, John.

I was just joking about trying to "gild the lilies."  Actually, this
is a science demonstration of evapotranspiration, which my wife often
did when she taught environmental science, and was now doint to
prepare for a demonstration for the science education nonprofit she
works with now.

She put the flowers in water with food coloring, and the dye leaves
colored lines on the edge of the petals, where the evaporation occurs
most strongly.
