The photo was taken with a long lens - 75-300 zoom at 117mm (about 230mm
full frame equivalent).

I'm not seeing it as too contrasty but it could just be personal
preferences.  There was almost no post processing done apart from some
cloning on the bottom left to get rid of an annoying rock and minor
cropping (the final crop is about 90% of the full image).  That minimal
amount of post processing is a bit unusual for me :-)>
