Life magazine is supposed to have advised its photographers that a photo essay needs most of the following types of shot to be effective:
Shooting plan 1. Intro / overall 2. Medium - one activity or group 3. Close-up / detail 4. Portrait 5. Interaction 6. Signature - summarise / decisive moment 7. Sequence or series 8. Clincher David Hurn then advises that you use your shooting plan so you don't waste time doing the same thing time and again, and to guide your edit.
