I like Annsan's crop or the variants on it (#6, #7) the best. It does
put the focus on the skiers more but the photo works better. The right
side is sort of hanging in space but it creates a nice tension in the
image - feels like the skiers will be swooping off to whatever on their
way down.

Thanks to all who commented on the two panoramas!
I took a few moments away from all the urgent issues that piled up
after several travels to play with the crops I had in mind.
It is interesting how different crops can work for different purposes.
In an off-list communication, Ann proposed a crop that corresponds to
her vision (posted with her permission):

(Many thanks to Ann for the time and energy in making this!)
I can clearly see the merits of this crop: it draws more
attention to the skiers. It is a good photo, but it's a different one.
For that intent, I would go even a bit more agressively:
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-6.jpg
or even
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-7.jpg
My initial intent, however, is to present the mountains where
skiers are just one of the "features", not the dominating one. And
that is
what I wanted to achieve.
For that here are a few versions:
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-1.jpg
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-2.jpg
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-3.jpg
I've also considered some "intermediate" (between the two intents)
option:
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-4.jpg
For reference, this is the original version:
http://42graphy.org/misc/2017-02-Utah/2017-02-PanoramaSnowBird-0.jpg
My personal preference at this point is as follows:
For the "full panorama" intent -1 or -2. (Sometimes I think -3
works too.)
For the "skiing mountain" intent, I prefer -7.
I would be curious to hear what PDMLers think about these different
versions.
All these files can be accessed directly from this page:

Numbers 0-7 correspond to the (non-uniform) progression of cropping,
from none to the max.
