In choosing an image for this month's PUG, I looked at my collection of
mountain images over the years. I decided on one of the more unusual
ones. I did, however, run across the oldest image in my mountain
collection, a view of Fujisan from the air. It is not technically very
good at all, but I was a real prize at the time, as I had made repeated
attempts during my time in Japan to capture Fuji, from the ground, from the
train, and from the air -- all to no avail. After my squadron's deployment
to Japan ended, I made a flight to Tokyo, to ferry a plane scheduled for
rehab. On the way into Tokyo, it was shrouded in clouds. While there for
three days, we mad a short trip inland, and again I hoped to get a glimpse,
but "no joy." On the way back, however, as we were making our outbound
turn, suddenly it was there. By the time I retrieved my camera, the
opportunity was almost gone, but I managed one fleeting shot.

Last year, I returned to Japan for the first time in half a century, and
took a trip on the Shikansen (Bullet Train) so that my wife and sun could
also see Fuji in all its glory. Once again, to no avail. Although we
traveled by train and bus to the fourth station, perhaps the classic
viewing spot, but we were met by a drizzle and low overcast clouds. It is a
very elusive mountain, more so than even Rainier.

In any event, here is my only "View of Mt Fuji":
