It's not that special now, it's the remnants of a zaibatsu, which was a very Japanese construct, but since those were broken up, it's more like the late 19th, early 20th century interlocking directory schemes used to get around anti trust legislation in the U.S. So while the Nikon doesn't formally have ties to other Mitsubishi Group companies, it does have a pretty good chance of getting support from it's informal partners.
