We don’t get many big brawny birds here in the heartland. But today a hawk 
landed in a nearby spruce while I was shooting dinky sparrows and chickadees. 
Not easy to identify him sitting in a tree, and at first I thought it was 
Cooper’s Hawk.

But I got one throwaway shot of him in flight, and due to the wing markings and 
the broad red tail, I think he’s a red-tailed hawk.
