It is a classic case of a solution in search of a problem.
That being said, the sensors in phones are getting surprisingly good
these days, outperforming a lot of classic film cameras. It also has the
advantage of getting the photos directly to most folks primary means of
communication.
I've also heard quite a few people wishing they had better lenses for
their phone cameras. If the problem is wanting to use old lenses you
have lying around this is probably less expensive than a dedicated
mirrorless camera and adapters.
One question is whether they also do something optically to correct for
the crop factor.
If not, they won't be around long enough to bother you.
