It is not a valid way of starting new threads because the message with the changed subject and all replies to it remain part of the original thread. Email headers contain a variety of information, and changing the subject field does not change the references field upon which threading and archiving depend. The only way to start a new thread is to write an entirely new message with the new subject (unless one is an IT geek who fully understands headers and how to edit them to fool the mailing list software, and even for an IT geek it is easier to just create a new message). As far as the email software is concerned changing the subject affects nothing because the software does not parse the subject field to determine threading, it parses the references field to determine threading.
