Sadly my Acer Travelmate 5744 Laptop has no PCI Express port so an
upgrade to USB3 is impossible. I realize I need a new laptop but that's
an expensive business in SA today.

You don't need to upgrade the whole computer if it's still got decent
specs, and you've got an available PCIe slot an add in USB 3 card can
be had pretty cheaply. Of course that only works if you've got a
desktop machine. On the other hand if you're doing your downloading
and editing on a laptop, there's no helping you.

OK if your computer is USB3. I'm still stuck in USB2.

Several years ago, probably when the K10 or k20 came out, Sandisk
had a deal where SD cards were being packaged with little USB card
readers. I've been using them ever since, and, of course, getting
longer and longer transfer times when moving image files to my
computer.
I finally decided enough was enough and bought myself a USB 3 card
reader.
Holy cow!!
The new reader is something like 6 times faster.
I'm very good about upgrading computers, I've done a computer
upgrade every other camera, but peripherals like card readers not so
much.
that's all.
