I'm pretty sure that there are two different teams working on this.
The first did the face recognition. This was an amazing success. I
remember the early days of AI a computer would take hours looking an
object, say a black cube from various different angles, spend even more
time computing and comparing the images to various stored images, then
declare the black cube a pencil.
In this case the recognition software nailed the it, it's obviously a face.
However the second team, spend the least amount of time possible, so the
system doesn't realize the face is on a statue.
