Had a gig doing Renaissance music at an elementary school in
Springfield, VA this afternoon. While I was there I picked
up a flier for something happening tomorrow and Sunday that
ought to have one or two good pictures in it somewhere. I'm
not going to be able to get to it, but I figured I'd post it
here in case any of the DC-area members are interested (and
so that folks all over the globe can go, "Huh!").

I'm thinkin' mostly the Sunday part of this:

| 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta and Family Festival
| June 1st & 2nd, 2002
| A Springfield Days event from the Fairfax County Park
| Authority and the Springfield Chamber of Commerce
|
| Fireworks, Food and FUn at Lake Accotink Park
|
| Saturday June 1
|
| Events and fun for the whole family inclding the Colonial
| Newfoundland's Water Dog Rescue demonstration, an
| Environmental Fair and the "Food Frenzy". Live music
| starts at 5:00 PM followed by Fireworks Display at 9:30 PM.
|
| Sunday June 2
|
| 13th Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta
| It's as simple as "Insert Tab A into Slot B." Build your
| own cardboard boat and take on the waters of Lake Accotink
| for the best fun of the summer. Whether you're racing or
| just watching, it's always a thrill to see who will sink
| or float in their cardboard boats. Boat judging starts at
| noon and the races begin at 2:00 PM.

The back of the flier has the rules for the regatta: life
jackets will be provided and must be worn; boats must be
made of cardboard; plastic sheeting is prohibited, as are
metal, wood, or plastic structures, but wax, paint, sealent,
or duct tape are permitted. Boats may not exceed 16 feet
in length or three occupants, except for "luxury liner"
category (4-6 people). 100 yard course with obstacles for
adults; 50 yard race for children 15 and under. Prizes
awarded in before-race judging for:  Pride of the Regatta;
Best Design/Costume; Team Spirit; Creativity; Most Likely
to Float; and "Titanic" (Most Likely to Sink).

It sounds like a real hoot!

PS: One of the dancers in my group was suggesting that next
year we enter a lap-strake Viking-style cardboard boat...
