I've come to the realization that I really need to actually plan these things out and think of them *before* I try to take the photos. I'm also quite certain that I'll come to this very same conclusion again, about a day after I next try to photograph a lunar eclipse.
In any case, I think that a bit more careful processing, choosing only a couple source frames, and choosing them carefully, made a noticeable improvement, but there's still plenty more room left for improvement.
