False alarm - phew - not sure what I did or didn't do but it is working
now.. might have been in wrong folder .. ya know, where there were no
image files..

That's odd. I can see .PEFs in Faststone (I'm on 5.1) and the Faststone web
site lists .PEF as supported - the latest version is 7.3.
Perhaps a reinstall might help.
