Make sure you avoid MID-DAY in Utah - 100 degree weather is not particularly pleasant for us brits.
Plenty of water, and carry as little as gear as possible while doing any desert walking! Maps VERY important for lone walking. Enjoy (and should you happen to pass by NY.... drop in for a beer!)
