Have you looked into upgrading the processors/RAM/GPU?
I bought a 2009 that had the firmware update to 5,1, and am slowly
putting newer, faster stuff in it. So far I've done a little faster RAM,
and more of it, and upgraded the GPU. It's not state of the art, but it
runs circles around 2012 MB Pro now, and didn't cost me a kidney for the
faster hardware. The largest expense was the unit itself, and you
already have that.
