Yes, this is a larva that I am raising for release. Ugly, ain't she? I am most seriously concerned about the tragic decline in the population of Monarch Butterflies in North America, and I raise and release from 30 to 70 every year. I have planted a lot of nectar plants in our yard, and quite a few milkweeds to permit them to reproduce. In the last 3 years, I have observed eggs that a number of released and wild Monarchs have deposited on my milkweeds.
Other butterflies are also much rarer in our area than was the case 10-20 years ago. Accordingly, I also raise a few Painted Ladies or American Ladies each year, and plant hosts for these species. I am hoping to also raise a few black Swallowtails later this year, if eggs or newly hatched larvae become available.
