I have driven through the UP East-to-West and West-to-East several times, but
am most familiar with Pictured Rocks and Munising area generally.

On the west end of Munising, on MI-28, is (or was anyway…) a small
walk-in/carry-out restaurant, IMHO one of the best sources of Cornish Pasties.
But you will have many opportunities for this “local” dish throughout the UP.
[In the late 1800s, early 1900s there were many immigrants from Cornwall to the
UP, attracted by the copper mining and related jobs. Meg’s grandparents were
part of that…]

Just a bit west of Munising, Marquette is a nice college town with good
lakefront, good brew pubs.

There are numerous waterfalls and small lakes in the Hiawatha National Forest,
SE of Munising. If you drive east from Munising, staying as close to Superior
as you can, as far as Deer Park on CR-H58 there are multiple spots with good
access to the lakeshore etc. Driving back west on US 2, Manistique has nice
lakefront parks on the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park and Seney National Wildlife Refuge are both worth
the trip!

If/when you get as far east as Tahquamenon Falls, it wouldn’t be that much
further off to the NE to Sault St. Marie and the Soo Locks. I recommend
Lakeshore Drive which branches off of MI-123 a bit south of Paradise, takes you
to a junction with I-75 a bit south of Sault St. Marie. Or SE to St. Ignace, a
short ferry ride to Mackinac Island. If you get that far east, the Straits
State Park just SW of Ignace provides great viewpoints of the Mackinaw Straits
bridge.

At the western end of I have been told that the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness
State Park is also good but haven’t made it there yet.
