It stopped, with more semi-blind clicking. I think (but do not know) that blowing up one of the faces to fill the window, or 100% (not sure which) finally made it stop.
On most Mac software command-period or command-shift-period stops a process. Leave it to Adobe to ignore useful convention. Thanks, Stan and Doug!
