In my experience the Epson software is far superior to Vuescan on an Epson 
flatbed. I get perfect scans with Rpson software on an Epson 850P. Same was 
true of earlier Epson flatbeds I own. I found it impossible to get good scans 
with Vuescan due to the clunkiness of its controls,
