Man, I must have had beginners luck with that. I went in and tried again with the method I used the first time and got about a dozen failures in a row.

So, I tried using the brush tool to paint in the tripod head so that Photoshop had a blank slate to work with and that seemed to work better.

Generative fill is something akin to playing the slots, you can get a lot of losers to have a winner.
