I have an M2 Mac Mini. I routinely do all the upgrades. They almost always add 
more malware protection and convenience features. I haven’t had a problem in 
recent years. In the bad old days of major architecture changes there were some 
outdated software problems, but recent upgrades have been flawless. “Bricking” 
a current model is usually  due to operator error.
