I'm trying to decide whether to take a second Spotmatic F or a Leica CL as a backup for a 3+ month trip later this year to Jordan and Egypt. I am a little concerned that having both a SLR and a rangefinder may be distracting. Taking a second SLR body offers the ability to use two lenses at the same time as a system. But I can also make the argument that a small quiet rangefinder will be very handy for discreet and low light use. On top of that, Spotmatics are no light weights.
I guess I could take all three, but I'm a back packing on a shoe string type traveler, and I not sure I want to deal with the added weight and bulk. Here's my kit so far: Spotmatic F, SMC 35/3.5, SMC 50/1.4, SMC 85/1.8, and a SMC 200/4 and either a 28mm or a 24mm soon to come. I also am taking a little Gitzo Tatalux tripod and the typical filters, etc. I'm also kicking around the idea of taking my old Mamiya 6 folder for formal portraits and B&W stuff. It really adds up fast doesn't it? I really wish I had more experience to rely on. On a previous long trip to South America, I took just a Canonet, and I remember how hard it was to deal with having both color and b&w film and only one camera. Believe me I came home with more than a few half rolls of exposed film. So it looks like I'm going to have to refine my intentions and make a decision.... What's your advice?
