If it is plastic it's a damned hard variety. I wonder if it is magnesium? It does feel more like plastic to the touch though. I have been using this lens for a few days now and it's certainly great to have a zoom lens in this focal length range. I'll say that a zoom lens for medium format, at least when they are as lightweight as this lens, makes a lot of sense as several MF wide angle primes weigths a lot.
