Mattias Klum used Pentax 35mm gear for years. His argument was that he couldn't afford to use anything but the best as he was isolated in various rainforest (Amazonas, Borneo etc) for months. A Pentax service man who serviced his gear, said that Klum didn't pay much or anything for his Nikon gear. After he switched he apparently appeared in marketing campaignes for Nikon.
