A couple of weeks ago I asked the list about a wide-angle replacement for my Tokina 19-35mm f3.5-4.5. Well, I have had to revise my desire to replace this little lens since getting some film back today. The trannies I have just got back are from a recent trip to Tasmania. I must say the little Tokina performed really well. There is some light loss at the edges, which is expected in a lens of this price range, but it is remarkably sharp. I shot an all Tokina kit on this trip, other than an FA 100mm f2.8 macro (which as anyone who has one knows is a stunning lens). I am really impressed with the Tokina glass I took along (28-80 ATX-Pro f2.8 and an 80-200mm ATX-Pro f2.8, as well as the 19-35mm). Sure, people will rightly argue that they are no match for FA glass, but neither is the price. And frankly, the difference would have to be stunning to lure me to spend the sort of money required for FA or A* glass. I can't see that the FA* glass is going to be four time better than my 80-200mm ATX-Pro, but the price certainly is. John Mustarde recommended I buy a 300mm f2.8 Tokina not long ago, and he was right. This is also a brilliantly sharp lens. Tokina deserves our support for supporting the PKA mount as they do.
I have put some of the images up on my photo.net pages in the Tasmania folder at http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=245306 for anyone who is interested in having a look. Please bear in mind that these are very low resolution scans using a poor substitute for a film scanner.
