Thanks, I will try the increase. However it seems that pdns does
not use it's own cache. Is there additional config to change the
behavior?

e.g. mail client connects to pop.example.com every 10 minutes
should pdns trust the info it has already from 10 minutes ago?

It does not seem to do that. There is chance that we don't 
understand
how pdns internals work.
