I'm a total n00b here, but I got wifi working with Ubuntu using ndiswrapper. Took me two days of screwing around. Would have taken an hour or two if I'd had half a clue what I was doing. My internal wifi is a Broadcom chip, which is one of the more problematic ones. Look for info on ndiswrapper and it should give you some sense of direction. There's a ton of documentation about it on the net.
