For those interested, this appears to be Daniel's device:

Actually it is the eXplorist 210 model
http://www.magellangps.com/en/products/product.asp?PRODID=1112
It worked with debian sarge out of the box.
When connected via USB to a computer it prompts on the screen of the
GPS to pick a mode.
File Transfer (USB mass storage mode)
NMEA Data Comm (Shows up on my computer as /dev/ttyACM0 for gpsdrive kismet etc)
Power Only (Just use the USB for power so it doesn't suck up batteries)
When you pick NMEA you additionally have 3 options for NMEA mode.
NMEA
V1.5 APA
V1.5 XTE
V2.1 GSA
Tracklogs, waypoints, geocaches etc are all saved in ascii, and the
file formats are documented. gpsbabel is supposed to support them. I
haven't figured out how to make a map to load onto it yet. Getting
that data on, and off the device is easy via the USB mass storage
interface.
My two biggest annoyances with the device. It can take as much as two
minutes to access the tracklogs with a big old "loading" screen.
Tracklogs only store points based on adding a new point when you
travel so much distance. For many applications I would rather have a
datapoint every second or few seconds instead. Garmin does it like
that.
