You are correct in your analysis - it is simply comparing columns 1 & 3 in
each line. You may add 'compare' columns by modifying the macro. There
are two lines to modify:
index_cells = Cells(i + top_row, top_column) & Cells(i + top_row,
top_column + 2)
- this creates a temporary string for comparison. Simply extend this
expression
If Cells(j + top_row, top_column) & Cells(j + top_row, top_column + 2) =
index_cells Then
- this performs the comparison. Extend this expression as above.
When you specify any column beyond column 5, it will need to be
column_no+1, as I insert the 'Qty' column here.
I hope I have it right - it's been a year or so!

This looks like it could be a very valuable tool. I just wondered though,
when the macro groups various components together, which columns does it
compare? The reason I ask is that if you generate the BOM in protel format
it groups components only based on "part type" and "footprint", and ignores
other columns. We place our internal P/N in the first part field and use it
in our BOM reports. Since it doesn't compare the part fields, in some cases
it means that parts are grouped together that are actually different
internal part numbers.
