Peter I suggest you do a search for SPICE. Years ago I managed to download a lot of documentation on it but as you may understand I no longer have the URL's.
Protel pretty much uses SPICE "out of the box", and the only app specific things you need to learn about are well documented. The protel graphical front end is just a GUI to spice and as such the netlist produced by it can be used by nearly all SPICE engines with little to no modifications. Here are a few pointers - Learn the meanings of Attribute, Part and Read Only fields for the schematic symbols and how they are used to create the netlist entry. - Model and circuit files (*.ckt & *.mdl) contain pre-written netlists that make up the devices you use. The schematic symbol points to them, using the read-only fields. These can only be edited in the library editor - Certain devices such as resistors, capacitors, voltage and current sources are built into SPICE and only require you to enter values - Simulation usually falls down due to convergence problems. Have a good look at your cct and make sure that every node has a DC path to ground, failing that you will have to fiddle with the advance SPICE settings, particularly the different iteration settings - If you are having difficulties running a simulation, turn off all analyses except the DC analysis (Operating point). SPICE will always try to figure out DC bias in the cct before continuing. - Create the netlist and have a look at the schematic netlist. You can spend hours wondering why something wont simulate only to find that a component hasn't been netlisted correctly. The variable POT in P99SE SP6 is a classic example of this.
