How can I create holes through a board in a footprint that don't have to have an electrical parallel in the schematic component? I've been using pads in the footprints to create mounting holes and then I have to put dummy pins in the schematic component.
No, there is no particular reason to put those dummy pins in the schematic symbol, unless you want the pins electrically connected. If not in the schematic, the pads will have no net assigned (and DRC will report an error if they are connected), the same as if they *are* in the schematic with no net connected.
On the other hand, if you want them connected, they should be in the schematic. Otherwise, even if you manually assign them the appropriate net, it will be removed whenever you update the board.
