I've also used connectors in the past (avionics, so they were rather
expensive) where the shell
formed a connection with leaf springs to its mating half before the
contacts, but it was a long time
ago and I can't recall who made them - Radial perhaps?

We are currently using AMP but they don't offer this
functionality or at least not with the one we are
using.

Yes, one pin longer that the other - they call it
first-make last-break.
