I know this has been discussed before, but the market constantly
moves and I want to hear recent experiences. I have an Nvidia
GeForce2 GTS that has given me good service since I bought this
machine, hmmm, probably 6 or 8 years ago. It's developed a low but
annoying howl that cuts in and out. I've traced it to the fan on the
video card; looks like the bushing has become worn enough to have
some play so it sets up enough chatter to bring the fan to a complete
stop, then the motor spins it back up again, repeating every few
seconds. Depending on temp, time of day, phase of the moon, etc., it
may stop doing it for several hours, then start back up again. I'm
thinking I'd better just replace the video card with something
current, or at least have something on hand for when this one dies in
the middle of an urgent project.

My needs are fairly simple; I'm not into computer gaming. Protel
itself is about as graphics-intensive as I get, although I do have a
very large collection of personal photos and videos online, and I of
course need to do normal office-type applications as well as
engineering apps. I'm running Win2K and don't plan to
up/side/downgrade to XP until I'm forced to do so, which I don't see
in the near future. I see today that Tiger has the GeForce FX 5500
for $45 (after screwing around with their goofy rebates, of course);
that looks more than adequate for the job. But I know Protel can be a
bit quirky about working with a specific video card. Anybody out
there have experience, good or bad, with Protel vs. this particular
card, or another they'd recommend in a similar price range?
