Guys,
Are we all forgetting something from the original post? Seemed to me
Yvet was trying to go from a Protel file to an
Autotrax format, is this even possible with files that were of suitable
pedigree?
Would seem to me that she is trying to move from a GM product to a Yugo
and expects compatibility. I don't know all the history but I would have
thought she is trying to downgrade, so I wouldn't necessarily expect it to work.
Certainly seems that Altium/Protel was on an intentional mission to
confuse users and the market place with the various product names/dates being
tossed around in this thread. I first used DOS Protel in approx. 1992, I
believe it was called Traxedit. It was the current version at that date but
anyone can correct me if I have the name slightly wrong. We immediately
upgraded (maybe downgraded, depends on your view) to Protel For Windows (PFW)
ver. 1.0 that was just being released at the time. Tried using it for about 8
months through to about ver. 1.8 and then trashed it because it was continually
crashing and corrupting the files and we couldn't get any work out the door and
moved on to another CAD package. Even in those days Protel was setting their
future path because the version - version fixes were grossly outnumbered by new
features that added many more bugs. Then I started using Protel at a new
employer in early 2000, using P98 for about 6 months prior to upgrading to
P99SE.

Subject: Re: [PEDA] Subject: Converting Very Old Protel V3 PCB Files
The first Protel program that I worked with was Autotrax, a demo
version. I used it to write converters between Autotrax and Tango
Series II. Tango Series I was a Protel program distributed in the
U.S. by Accel. I had assumed that Easytrax *was* Tango Series I. It
appears that this was incorrect, and that I never saw a copy of Tango
Series I, which would have been equivalent to the "very old" Protel
V3 or similar.
Both Easytrax and Autotrax are available for download at Altium, as
has been said. I would have assumed that Autotrax would load the
older Protel files, and nobody has confirmed that it does not. Has
Mr. Ford tried?
The file format seems similar, and might even be identical (or a
subset of the later format).
