Just to clarify, if you use an X-acto knife with the blade at right 
angles to
the board, it will scrape, but not gouge.  Use light pressure, and you 
should be
able to easily scrape the mask off without harming the copper.  It may 
scrape
off some of the solder plating, as that is quite soft.
