aj, I've be buying upgrades since 2.8. Not one of them was worth a damn till I got AD6. I skipped DXP 2004. I did a few boards on SE but never liked it at all. I was producing boards on AD6 within three days. I got squeezed into doing a $4000.00 upgrade. What I see is if you are going to stay with Protel/Altium you will be paying a lot more than $8000.00 somewhere down the road. Plus I bet you can work a deal for less. It seems not everyone pays the same price. Anyway my point was if you CAN afford it it's better to skip the SE learning curve and get a superior product to boot.
