Frontpanelexpress is not my first choice, however, using their
online software to design a panel, you save setup fees, you get an
instant quote & you can get cut panels overnight.
I'm just interested in the quote so I may compare with local metal
shops here in Montreal.
A friend of mine built a home made his own 0.4 mil accurate CNC
Milling machine & he used to charge me 25$ per 2U rackmount chassis
faceplate, same day service. However, he had a fire last month & wont
be back in business until August, after the InfoComm show (
http://www.infocommshow.org/html/ ) in 14 days where I'll be
exhibiting. Now, I'm scrambling to find an affordable solution.

Dennis's observation reminds me of a time (back in 1994) when I "snail-mailed" a floppy
disk to a PCB manufacturer, who subsequently called me inquiring "what is a zip file?".
(Then again, in 1998, I corresponded with somebody else who *still* hadn't encountered zip files
prior to me emailing him such a file.)
And I seem to recall that there have previously been some messages sent to this
mailing list in which the senders commented on cases of PCB manufacturers not
being happy with receiving RS-274X format Gerber files (which incorporate
embedded aperture definitions), and who wanted to receive RS-274D format Gerber
files (which *don't* incorporate embedded aperture definitions) instead.
It is one thing to accept that some manufacturers might not be fully up-to-date
on some matters (such as not yet being able to handle ODB++ format files, as
one example), but I fully agree with Dennis about being wary of anyone who
requires files to be provided in HPGL format.

Geoff Harland.
aren't you a little leary of a sheet metal shop that can't read the most
universal file for that line of work ?
i looked at their ad once and called them once but something didn't
smell right, at least for what i do
what is the nature of the panel? material and hole shapes ?
are they going to laser it ?

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, I do still have all my originals, I've been
with Protel since AdcPCB 2.x.

*If* you (also) have a copy of Protel 98 (or a copy of the *original*
version of Protel 99), *and* *if* you can save a copy of your Protel
99 SE PCB file as a Protel 98 file, then you might be able to use
Protel 98 (or Protel 99) to create an HPGL file from the PCB file
concerned. (With the release of Protel 99 SE, it was no longer
possible to create "plot files" or "plotouts" from PCB files, or at
least not unless you can acquire a copy of an printer driver for an
appropriate type of printer, as Steve suggested).
