*The Charles S. Peirce Society Newsletter, 4:1*
*May 2020*

Dear Gary,

During these unprecedented and tumultuous times, we hope that you and yours
are safe and well. The Charles S. Peirce Society continues its work of
encouraging and promoting scholarship related to that great and original
thinker. In this newsletter, you will find information about new and
exciting research. We invite you to let us know about the work you are
doing by emailing peircesoci...@gmail.com.

Yours truly,

The Charles S. Peirce Society Executive Committee

*Spotlight on Michael Raposa, President of the Charles S. Peirce Society *

Michael L. Raposa is a professor of Religion Studies and the E. W.
Fairchild Professor of American Studies at Lehigh University, where he has
served as a member of the faculty for 35 years. After completing
undergraduate studies at Yale College (where John E. Smith was his faculty
adviser in philosophy) and a master’s degree at Yale Divinity School,
Raposa received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, writing
a dissertation on Peirce under the direction of Murray G. Murphey. He is
the author of numerous articles devoted to Peirce, pragmatism, and American
religious thought, as well as four books, including *Peirce’s Philosophy of
Religion *(1989) and *Theosemiotic: Religion, Reading, and the Gift of
Meaning *(forthcoming). Raposa first coined the term “theosemiotic” in 1987
to designate a distinctively Peircean approach to philosophizing about
religion, a word that he felt at the time was ugly enough to be safe from
kidnappers. He has been a member of the advisory board for the Peirce
Edition Project since 2010 and also served as editor of the *American
Journal of Theology and Philosophy *from 2009 to 2014.

*In Memoriam: Joseph Brent (1928–2020)*

We are sad to announce the recent death of Joseph Brent, past president of
the Charles S. Peirce Society and author of the first full biography of
Peirce, *Charles Sanders Peirce: A Life*. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, and
the son of a career diplomat, Brent studied at Princeton and received his
PhD in history from UCLA. A civil rights activist and veteran of the
Korean War, Brent was a tenured professor in the University of District
Columbia history department until his retirement in 1995. More information

*New Book Series with De Gruyter*

A new book series entitled “Peirceana,” co-edited by Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen
and Francesco Bellucci, has been contracted with Mouton De Gruyter. The
purpose of the book series is to provide a forum for the best current work
on Peirce worldwide, including volumes devoted to Peirce’s influence on the
development of modern sciences and scientific method, as well as his
influence on contemporary philosophy from the interdisciplinary
perspectives of intellectual inquiry. The series will also publish
untranslated, English selections of Peirce’s writings. The first volumes
have already been printed. Members of the Society are invited to submit
their book proposals. For inquiries, please contact Ahti at his gmail

*Peirce’s Library: A Plea to Fellow Peirce Scholars*

Do you know of books that might have belonged to Peirce’s Library at some
point? We are hoping to consolidate a comprehensive catalogue of Peirce’s
books and would like to ask you to share any information you might have
come across during your research on the whereabouts of volumes Peirce might
have owned or had in his possession at any point in his life. Please send
information to the past president of the Society, Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen,
at his gmail address: ahti.pietarinen. Thanks!

*Have You Been Keeping Up with the Transactions? *

The *Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society* remains the premier
venue for research on Peirce, pragmatism, and American philosophy. The
last two issues have been remarkably rich in content, with essays ranging
on topics as diverse as:

Dave Beisecker and “Thinking the Problem: From Dewey to Hegel” by
   Christophe Point and Jean-Baptiste Vuillerod)
   - The philosophy of perception (“Subconscious Inference in Peirce’s
Epistemology of Perception” by Justin Humphreys and “The Myth that Dewey
Accepts ‘the Myth of the Given’” by Jim Garrison),
   - Peirce’s philosophy of science (Abduction in the Everyday Practice of
Science: The Logic of Unintended Experiments” by Frederick Grinnell and
“‘In Memory of These Concrete Living Gests’: C.S. Peirce on Science of
   Review” by Alessandro Topa),
   - Political philosophy (“Democracy and Moral Inquiry: Problems of the
Methodological Argument” by Henrik Rydenfelt and “The Fascist and the
Democrat: Crisis of the Political in Dewey and Schmitt” by Emerson R.
   Bodde),
   - Our Deeply Human Concerns (“The Humble Argument Is Musement on God’s
Great Argument” by David Rohr and “Mortality in the Light of Synechism: A
   Peircean Approach to Death”

We encourage to check out the most recent volumes and learn from the work
of these excellent Peirce scholars!

*Trending: Peirce’s Semiotics*

Peirce’s developments in semiotics stand as one of the great achievements
of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Influencing such
luminaries as Walker Percy, Umberto Eco, and Gilles Deleuze, and impacting
fields as diverse as logic, biology, theology, and anthropology, Peirce’s
attention to the diversity of signs and how they function is an enduring
source of inspiration and insight.
