Dear Gary & Ben,

I hope this message finds you well. I would like to share the message below
with the Peirce-L members to inform fellow researchers in semiotics and
linguistics about the field I am working on. While the event mentioned did not
explicitly focus on semiotics, I believe the interdisciplinary link I make
could be of interest to others working on similar topics. If you find it
appropriate, could you kindly forward the message to the list?

Thank you very much for your time and collaboration.

Best regards,
Cécile

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to share with you the video of one of the two presentations
conducted in French as a prelude to the *International Conference in
Linguistics, Translation Studies, and Artificial Intelligence – A Synergy
Applied to BE + V-ing*. In this video, a conversation on language with
Jean-Pierre Gabilan (University of Savoie Mont-Blanc) and Francisco Matte Bon
(International University of Rome, Italy) is moderated by Cécile Cosculluela
(University of Pau - UPPA). You can watch the video via the following link:

We would like to thank the colleagues, students, and language enthusiasts who
attended this event, whether online or in person, at the Palais Beaumont on
December 1 and/or at the Château de Pau on December 2, 2024. During the
conference, eight guest speakers demonstrated, through authentic examples in
various languages, how Henri Adamczewski’s *meta-operational linguistics* sheds
light on their contemporary research and teaching. This central theoretical
framework, enriched by *translation studies* and *artificial intelligence*,
highlighted the synergy between these disciplines. It also underscored the
importance of analyzing discourse in terms of *presupposition* (or *thirdness,
in Peirce’s semiotics* ) and *non-presupposition* (or *secondness, in a
semiotic approach* )—a perspective not yet integrated into Large Language
Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT.

As highlighted by AI experts during the presentations, *LLMs* face contradictions when attempting to explain BE + V-ing because they rely solely on traditional grammatical theories. As a result, they will start by stating that BE + V-ing expresses an ongoing action (also referred to by terms such as "progressive" or "continuous form," "open right boundary," or "imperfective aspect") whereas the simple form expresses a general habit (also referred to by terms such as "general truth," "completed process," "closed right boundary," or "perfective aspect"). And when asked to take into account examples such as "He's playing tennis every Sunday," they logically conclude that BE + V-ing expresses both an ongoing action and a general habit. This inconsistency reflects the limitations of both traditional grammars and AI. It is now key to become aware that learners and teachers often lack the necessary tools to grasp the *presuppositional* (or *triadic, in semiotic terms* ) *semantic core of BE + V-ing* — a gap that this conference contributes to addressing by sharing practical and effective tools as those presented in the video above.

Meta-operational linguistics also offers a robust approach to clarifying
significant misunderstandings, such as the relationship between language and
the extralinguistic world of actions or between chronological time and
grammatical time (to which *semiotics adds interpretant time*). While
artificial intelligence is a powerful tool, its “*intelligence*” remains
limited to data processing. In their presentations at this colloquium, *AI*
specialists emphasized that its full potential can only be realized when
combined with human expertise. They demonstrated how to engage effectively in
applications guided by critical thinking, which is indispensable for leveraging
LLMs.

Finally, we wish to express our sincere gratitude to the colleagues and
partners who made this event possible: the University of Pau and the Adour
Region (UPPA), the ALTER research laboratory at UPPA, the Regional Council of
Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Neo Terra, and the National Museum and Domain of the Castle
of Pau.

Thank you for your attention, and we hope you enjoy the video. Photos are also
