 [Subj: Interesting conference

I received this conference notice by academic samizdat, but it looks
interesting and possibly important for some of the people I've gotten to
know who are on this list and into working-class studies.

Unfortunately the email-address in the notice is either incorrect or not
working. If anybody knows these folks or has a correct email for them I'd
be grateful to get it. (Or I suppose I could pick up the phone, but that
would mean disconnecting the modem!)

"Working Class Lives/Working Class Studies"

The conference will be a interdisciplinary exploration of working class
life and culture in America by both academic and nonacademic workers. It
will be held June 9-11 1995 at Youngstown State Univ., Youngstown Ohio.
The conference will examine personal experiences and social and political
strategies of the American working class from the past to the present. It
will also discuss the practical directions working class life may take in
the future. The conference organizers seek academic and nonacademic
papers, artwork, fiction, poetry, and other representations of American
working-class life and culture for both formal and informal presentations,
discussion, and/or performance. Possible areas for exploration include
literature of and by the working class, social history, material culture,
journalism, art, ethnography, biography, autobiography, and personal
narrative accounts of work. Presenters should send abstracts of between
250-500 words describing their project and some suggestion for the format
in which it might best be presented. Proposals for panel sessions are also
welcome. Address correspondence to Bill Mullen or Dr. Linda Strom,
English Dept., or Dr. Janet Ore, History Dept., Youngstown State Univ.,
Youngstown OH 44555-0001.

Deadline for proposals is Jan. 15 1995.
