I agree. This book is the second volume in what is announced to end up
as a trilogy (have anyone seen a third volume yet?) The first vol. is
"Red Mars", which is just as good.
Btw, I was really surprised that "Green Mars" upheld the high standard
of the first volume. Usually, sequel volumes based on one SF
best-seller are disappointing, the author and the publisher trying to
squeeze the maximum out of the original tomato. An example is the
disappointing "The Gripping Hand", Niven/Pournelles sequel to "The Mote
in God's Eye" (which really was great, even if N/P are not the most
ideologically simpatico guys I know of). Another example is the
not-that-good sequel (can't remember the title) to Greg Bear's
brilliant "Eon".
How about creating a sub-group within pen-l of left-wing economist
sci-fi enthusiasts?? :-) :-)
(- maybe I meant this seriously? I don't know).
